A Big Fish in Mauritius
January 7, 2025
The flight from Mumbai arrived at dawn. Our first stop was Port Louis, the capital. Mauritius serves as offshore headquarters for Maple Bear East Africa.
In a nondescript office building, in a conference room inexplicably painted pink, we held a board meeting. Where the hell had we landed?
Mauritius discombobulates. A population of French-speaking South Asians. Chocolate croissants at breakfast. An extinct bird as mascot. Souvenirs of dodos everywhere.
“Do you want to go deep sea fishing?”
I agree, insisting we take something first for sea sickness.
We had to be awakened from a gravol-induced coma in time for Rodney to reel in the gigantic fish the crew actually hooked. And then there was a picture, of course.
“It’s still alive! Throw it back!” I shouted.
Whack!
“No it’s not.”
Thanks to us, an entire village ate well that night.
