“Remind me again. How is Easter Island on our way to Uruguay?”

We were headed for Montevideo with a quick meeting in Buenos Aires. Santiago de Chile—the jumping off point for Easter Island—seemed out of the way on my map. The Maple Bear CEO disagreed.

Five and half hours of flying directly into the middle of the vast, empty Pacific ocean, I couldn’t get Lost out of my head. On return, I consoled myself, the pilot would have a hard target: the entire South American continent.

But those famous heads! Surely aliens must have built them, right? Our guide disagreed. They are all phallic symbols, he explained. Oh dear. Thoughts?

It was a very long way to go for only three nights. But what was the point of having the freedom to stop anywhere in the world on our business trips without seeing places like Easter Island?

Next time though, (as if!) someone remind me to pack an umbrella.
