One Day in Hyderabad, India

Rodney and Robin with school head

“Why the fuck are you being so nice to everyone?”

The normally calm Maple Bear CEO was shouting at me.

“Tell them you need something else to eat!”

I burst into tears. It had been a very long day.

It started out well. Only smiles on the first school tour. It deteriorated from there. Five hours in a stuffy mini-van crawling to our next school through congested Hyderabad traffic undid us.

I almost wet my pants. And, we were starving.

A bathroom proved to be too much for Rodney. And a sandwich of raw onions. I hadn’t mentioned my allergy to our hosts. At the intersection of chaotic traffic, an inedible lunch, and an unhygienic bathroom lived a hungry man with low blood sugar.

“It’s all right.” The school staff was reassured by our handler.

“They’re married.”

Relief arrived at the airport. A feed of Kentucky Fried Chicken, of all things, set us right.
